The Brussels Art Fair turns 64

This January 26th starts the 64th edition of the prestigious BRAFA, the Brussels Art Fair.
Held in Tour & Taxis, it will host 133 galleries and art dealers from 16 different countries, which have curated their most beautiful, rare or precious in their respective fields, for an estimated total between 10 000 to 15 000 different objects. Expecting them in this ephemeral museum are renowned connoisseurs and a public as significant as it is diverse, to pay tribute to artistic creation under all its forms.

Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four ?

Can the BRAFA expect a success story like that of 1967’s Paul McCartney, who sang those melancholic lyrics ? Their staff seems to think so, counting more than 65.000 visitors last year and watching increasingly laborious Belgian and European galleries join in.

And, on top of keeping their recipe of success, Chairman Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke seems to want to bring evolution, adding sixteen new names to their exhibition :

“It’s always with great pride that we unveil the list of our participants”, stated Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke, Chairman of BRAFA, “for it is indicative of the health and attractiveness of our event. With sixteen new names, we are consistent with the previous editions, and from my point of view this is an ideal percentage. It means we are able to bring in novelty without calling into question the internal equilibrium among the various specialities, and without shaking everything up. I think it is important that we can offer our visitors a form of continuity, with galleries who have been faithful to the fair for many years and whom our visitors enjoy seeing each time, while also offering a touch of novelty. For it is thanks to this fine balance that our event retains its strength and attests to its openness.”

Guests of honour

As their guest of honour, BRAFA chose the internationally renowned duo Gilbert & George.
Originally performance artists, they became famous for their huge photomontages of bright colours, with superimposed black gridlines evoking the stained-glass windows of churches. Mystical, polemical, humorous and always conveying a message, they will present five recent large-scale works at various spots throughout the fair for you to discover.
