Olympe Tits, Master of Photography Finalist

14.07.2017 - Editorial board

Series 2 of Sky Arts’ Master of Photography has come to a close and Antwerp-based photographer Olympe Tits has brought home a second place title. Already, this year has been huge for Olympe, after being granted a solo exhibition at the Schipperskapel in Bruges. She recorded the competition for 8 weeks while her work was being displayed, and had the show broadcast across England, Italy, Austria, Germany, and Ireland.

At the start of her career, Olympe was training as a dancer at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp. She began taking photographs in 2012, dedicating her work to the perspectives on physical realities and femininity she took as a dancer. By 25 she’d shifted her focus towards photography and has already made a name for herself across multiple outlets.

In the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards last year, Olympe won the Belgian National Award. From there she was chosen among thousands of portfolios to compete with 11 other photographers for Master of Photography’s 150,000€ grand prize. Throughout the series the artists were asked to collaborate with world-renowned photographers David Alen Harvey, Carla Kogelman, Donna Ferrato, Martin Parr, Ezra Shaw, Siegfried Hansen and Steve McCurry. Each week, a jury consisting of Oliviero Toscani, Darcy Padilla and Caroline Hunter would (harshly) criticize the work, sending home at least one contestant per episode.

It was close, and Olympe made it through to the end, gaining important experience and insights from some of the most talented photographers on the planet. Olympe’s work has been displayed across Belgium and the world in places and galleries in London, Miami, Paris and Perth. Readers should look out for updates on her future exhibits here or on her website. Those who urgently need to experience some incredible photos should head to the massive Steve McCurry exhibit in the Stock Exchange of Brussels, running through July 25.
