All of the fresh product minus the water, meet SUPERSEC co-founder Xavier Denis

28.03.2018 - Dries Tack

Supersec started out as a necessity for Philippe Emanuelli, former chef of Café des Spores. In need of wild mushrooms all year long he was looking for a gastronomic and sustainable solution, yet he was disappointed by what was on the market. That’s when the process of drying piqued his interest and he decided to find his own solution.

Together with his brother-in-law Xavier Denis the 2 men launched SUPERSEC in 2011. Today the company offers a wide variety of dried foods - amazing products without water, yet full of taste.

We met with Xavier on the TAVOLA premium food and drinks fair in Kortrijk, where we found him surrounded by rows of chips baked in Madrid.

Were you born or did you become an entrepreneur?

I became an entrepreneur. I worked as a consultant in a bank for 12 years before taking this leap. My studies did not prepare me for this. In my opinion, universities should play a much bigger role in pushing and exciting students to become entrepreneurs. Maybe I always had it in me, I just needed a little push. I loved the idea of Philippe Emanuelli, and so we made the jump together.

What radical changes do you expect in your industry?

People start to understand that quality does not come cheap. We are not competing with big-chain supermarkets. We make, import and offer great products that are made with respect and love. We aim for the very best and want our clients to be happy. That’s the only sustainable way forward.

What's on your bucket list?

Keep growing Supersec. We love this project and we want it to succeed. Next to that, I have simple things on my bucket list. Spending time with my family enjoying great food with friends and staying active and healthy. Swimming in on my daily list, you can find me in a pool every day at lunch.

Who is / has been your mentor?

I’d like to mention Philippe Coulon and Valerie Bauloye, my former bosses from my banking life. They were innovative leaders who inspired and encouraged me.

What is a problem you face every day that nobody has fixed yet?

The whole world should know about Supersec. We are working on that.

What is / are your guilty pleasure(s)?

To be honest, it’s our chocolate sesame bars. They’re not that healthy, but they’re just perfect after a good swim. A delicious energising snack.

Which Belgian entrepreneur(s) inspire you the most?

Brussels Beer Project [founded by Olivier de Brauwere and Sébastien Morvan] fascinates me. It’s a collaborative project. These guys really know how to stay innovative through co-creation. They bring fresh air and great flavours into the Belgian craft brewing scene! I also love the way the communicate.

Generous, is another great Brussels project founded by 2 young couples. They started an amazing Biscuit bakery in Anderlecht. These people totally live up to their name:  their products, packaging, service…. It’s all very generous and delicious. Yes, Brussels is alive and kicking!
