Meet TheColorGrey - the most sensual sound from Belgium

11.05.2018 - Dries Tack

Will Michiels, aka TheColorGrey, fell in love with music thanks to his older brother. He was the one to give Michiels his old synth. The star in the making was 9 back then. Only a few years later, he started writing his own lyrics.

These days TheColorGrey is touring all over Belgium with his new EP “For What It's Worth” (discover the album here). The talent from Antwerp raps, sings, and produces his songs. In them, he mixes rap, soul, RnB, and peppers it with funky vibes.

What's your favourite song?

One of my favorite songs is "No woman no cry" by Bob Marley. I know it for some many years and it still makes me emotional.

Who’s on your advisory board? To whom do you listen?

I don't really have an advisor per se. I usually create my music alone in my room. I do sometimes ask my guitarist for advice on some compositions. But that’s pretty much it.

I do have a lot of inspirations, and in a way, you could say that I listen to them. Those are artists like D'Angelo, Prince, ODC...

What does Belgium sound like?

The artist who best represents Belgium for me is Stromae and his song "Alors on danse". Moreover, like me, he is half African and I can identify a lot with him and his work.

Which artist should be banned from radio and all other media?

For me, music is a matter of taste. Everyone has a choice to listen to what they want. So I can't see myself banishing someone who's probably loved by other people. If I don't like something, I don’t bother, I just go my way.

If you had to compare your music to food what would it be?

It would be a buffet, where you could find a little bit of everything.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

In my wildest dreams, it would be with artists like D'Angelo, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino... I would also love to collaborate with Stromae and Baloji.

What’s the song list for your funeral?

The first song would be "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. Then I would definitely include some of my idols - Bob Marley, Prince, etc. I'd go for a balanced mix of both sad and happy songs.

Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll?

Honestly, I'm a pretty chill guy. I write music in my own room. I relax with my friends watching football or Netflix... What I mean, is that I don’t think this expression really fits me.

Which Belgian talent should we feature on Belgian Boutique next?

I would say Bertony Da Silva who is behind the brand Arte Antwerp. And my best friend Malik who's a dancer. He won "So You Think You Can Dance" about three years ago. He is a choreographer and at his own agency.
